Editor's letter:
A recent trip to Whitstable reminded me what a joy the British seaside can be: long, gentle walks on the beach, proper fish and chips with mushy peas, pots of cockles doused in vinegar, and hot sugary doughnuts freshly-fried, burning your fingers as you take a precarious bite from the oil-stained paper bag. Somehow, everything tastes better on the beach. Even a pebble beach that pokes and prods as you stubbornly jostle for space on a picnic blanket. Sunny spring days are fleeting and I’m determined to make the most of them.
Talking of picnics, I’ve noticed a certain outdoor snack is having a moment in London right now. Soggy supermarket sandwiches, which suspiciously taste the same regardless of filling, have been replaced by epic alternatives. The Dusty Knuckle Bakery in East London is my current favourite, serving up generously-filled rolls and slices of sourdough with unique flavour combinations such as braised purple sprouting broccoli with romesco and feta, or charred celeriac with Lincolnshire Poacher cheese, mojo verde and herb salad, on a daily basis. Then there’s Bodega Rita’s in King’s Cross, where Missy Flynn and her team are taking inspiration from the ubiquitous corner stores in New York and LA, pairing sourdough sandwiches, Vietnamese banh mi and Peruvian sanguches with natural wines and craft spirits. For those who live too far from the original, Max’s Sandwich Book is the ultimate guide to creating your own sarnie of dreams at home. I’d love to hear about your own favourite sandwich shops – the old-school classics and the trendsetters – so tag @__atthetable__ on Twitter and Instagram with your perfect carb-fuelled lunch. I’ve got my eye on the soon-to-launch Sons & Daughters and Snackbar for my future lunch spots.
A final favour to ask: if you’ve been enjoying our podcast, we’d love it if you could rate, review and share it with other food-obsessed listeners. Yet to discover it? If you love food, and books, and talking about food and books, the Voices At The Table podcast is for you. Just remember to buy snacks.

Spotlight
Æcorn Aperitifs
Informed by 17th century English herbal remedies and inspired by the European aperitif tradition, Æcorn Aperitifs are made from English-grown Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay grapes, pressed early and blended with appetite stimulating herbs, roots and bitter botanicals. The result? A bold, bittersweet and complex collection of non-alcoholic aperitifs. We’ve been enjoying all three – Æcorn DRY, Æcorn BITTER and Æcorn AROMATIC – over ice, with a splash of sparkling water or tonic and a slice of citrus.

Mangoes
Mango fever has hit London and we’ve been queuing up at our local Indian shop to get our fix. We also fell for these mango cupcakes at Violet bakery in East London.

The Dusty Knuckle
Exceptional bread and knockout sandwiches. Enough said. Ok there’s more to say – they make everything in-house and help train young people who’ve struggled to find meaningful work.

Honey & Smoke
Sarit Packer and Itamar Srulovich are inviting diners to enjoy late-night iftar feasts at Honey & Smoke throughout Ramadan. We were treated to a sneak peek of the menu last week and we’re still thinking about the slow-cooked lamb with plums and roses.

Joël Penkman
At first glance, Joël Penkman’s illustrations look like photographs. Fun, playful, and nearly always food-focused, her drawings make us smile. You’ll find a few of her creations on our website and in our magazine.
